Sovereign King and Caring Lord
He reigns in distant realms of space,
Where whirling galaxies abound;
He governs every molecule
That quivers whispered words to sound;
Who hurl themselves to land from sea;
His seal impressed the continents;
He orders all
majestically.
*****
He hears the kidling on the crag,
Directing sunlight warm its way;
He sends the spring and autumn showers
For which the flowered valleys pray;
He satisfies each varied kind
Of all creation, great and small.
His word sustains the sum of them;
In faithfulness He rules them all.
Oh give Him praise with full accord,
This sovereign King, and caring Lord,
Who caused in time the worlds that be,
Yet calls man to eternity.
His glory fills both earth and sky;
To Him your worship rightly bring;
Your tongue, His Name, to magnify.
Kevin Hartnett, January, 1999
This poem is cast in the form of a psalm. I tried to capture the full range of created things in the various examples chosen from nature- large, small; near, far; plants, animals; sea, land. etc. God created everything and saw that it was good including - and especially- man.
For those interested, I have a version of the poem that lists scripture references for every line. You can find it here: Download sovereign_king_and_caring_lord.doc
